The one thing we can't take

Leftover spa chemicals. Chlorine granules, bromine tablets, pH adjusters and shock treatment are hazardous waste in Ontario and we are not licensed to carry them. Set them aside and take them to a City of London household hazardous waste depot — that part is free. Everything else, including the waterlogged cover everybody assumes is a problem, goes in the trailer.

Why a Hot Tub Isn't a Two-Friend Job

People try. It usually ends with a cracked shell halfway down the side of the house and a weekend gone.

It weighs more than you think

A dry four to six person acrylic shell with its frame is roughly 200 to 350 kg. Add the water that never quite drains out of the footwell and the foam insulation that has been soaking it up for a decade, and you are well past what four people can carry safely.

It won't fit through the gate

Standard tubs run about 2.1 m square. A standard London side gate is under a metre. That is the whole problem, and it is why cutting the shell down on site is the normal answer rather than a last resort.

Nobody will take it at the curb

City of London curbside collection will not take a hot tub shell, and most transfer stations will not accept one loose in a pickup bed. It has to go in on a trailer, cut down, with someone who can get it there.

The deck is usually involved

If the tub sits in or against a deck, the deck has to be cut back before the shell will move. That is saw work over a structure you still want standing afterwards, which is where most DIY attempts stop.

It helps, but it is not required. If you can run a submersible pump or open the drain valve the day before we come, the shell is lighter and the job is quicker. If the tub is frozen, the drain is seized, or you simply would rather not deal with it, the LOW Price crew will handle the water when we arrive at no extra charge. What we do ask is that you tell us in advance, because a full 1,500-litre tub changes how we approach the lift. Can you remove a hot tub that is built into a deck?

Yes, and it is one of the most common hot tub jobs we do in London. A deck-mounted or sunken tub means cutting back the decking around the shell far enough to lift it out, which we do on site with saws rather than trying to winch the tub through a fixed opening. The cut decking, joists and skirting all leave in the same trailer load. Because there is more material, these jobs usually price as a three-quarter trailer at $525 rather than a half at $350. Do you cut the hot tub up, or take it away whole?

We cut it down on site, in almost every case. A four to six person acrylic shell will not fit through a standard gate, down most side passages, or around the corner of a London semi, and dragging it across a lawn wrecks the grass. Cutting the shell into carryable sections means two people can walk it out by hand with no heavy equipment, no ruts and no damage to fences or siding. It also means the whole thing packs down small enough to leave in one trailer load. If your tub genuinely has a clear straight run to the driveway, we will say so and take it out whole.

How long does hot tub removal take?

Most hot tub removals in London take the LOW Price crew somewhere between one and three hours from arrival to a swept pad. A straightforward free-standing tub with a clear path to the driveway is closer to an hour. A sunken tub, a tub inside a gazebo, or one that needs decking cut back before it will move is closer to three. Either way it is a single visit — we do not book a separate demolition trip and a separate haul-away trip. We work 7 AM to 9 PM every day, so an evening or weekend slot is usually available if that suits you better.

Will you take the gazebo and decking around the tub as well?

Yes. The gazebo over the tub, the cedar skirting, the steps, the patio stones and the pad underneath can all go in the same load, and it is far cheaper to do it in one visit than to book a second job later. Where does my old hot tub actually end up?

The shell goes to the transfer station, and the parts of the tub that can be separated out are diverted rather than buried. Acrylic shells cannot be recycled in Ontario, so those are disposed of properly, but the steel frame, the pump housings, the heater and any copper in the wiring are all pulled out as scrap metal. LOW Price is a licensed, fully insured Ontario company and everything we haul from London goes to a legitimate facility — nothing is dumped, burned or left on a back road. If you want to know exactly where a particular load went, ask and we will tell you.

Do I need to be home when you remove the hot tub?

No. Plenty of the hot tub jobs LOW Price does around London are for people at work, out of town, or selling a property they no longer live in. As long as we have gate access to the tub and a clear instruction about what stays and what goes, we can do the whole job and send you photos of the empty pad when we are finished. Payment can be handled by e-transfer afterwards. Can you disconnect the electrical, or do I need an electrician?

We can disconnect a hot tub at the tub end and make it safe to remove, which is all that most jobs need. What we are not is a licensed electrical contractor, so if you want the dedicated 240-volt circuit properly decommissioned back at the panel, or the breaker and disconnect box removed, that part needs a licensed electrician. Most London homeowners simply have us cut the tub free and leave the disconnect box in place for a future tub or a future electrician.
